The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture (NYSS) is holding an exhibition to display the artistic achievements of its students, an event where Alla Broeksmit has been invited to showcase her paintings.
New York City, NY, May 9, 2017 (Newswire.com) - The New York Studio School is renowned for its rigorous curriculum that demands the most from its students. The coursework evokes the artist’s potential and provides an environment that is conducive to bringing their vision into reality. Outstanding students who are enrolled in the Masters of Fine Arts program at NYSS are offered the opportunity to display their work during the MFA Thesis Exhibition, which is a visual culmination of all the knowledge they have accrued during their time at the school. NYSS is helmed by Graham Nickson, who serves as Dean of the School and strives to ensure that students are benefiting from the curriculum as much as possible.
Alla Broeksmit has proven herself to be an accomplished student of the arts at the school. In her personal artist statement, Broeksmit declared:
“If we imagine a distant country, we see the reflection of the shimmering golden domes and the vast expansive forests crowded with poplar trees. Suddenly, we hear the metallic chains, thuribles are burning incense, the bells are roaring. I am on the edge of the world. I am seeing it all, the eternal and the finite, the trees, the flowers, the light, the dark, the stars, the circles of smoke, the hands and feet entangled, the people kissing, leaving and arriving. I am seeing it all, the queens, the kings, the birds, the rivers, the clouds, the bridges and the sky, the medieval buildings, the Cathedrals, the houses, the men are sitting in them. The women and the children are running; the silhouettes are touching me.
"Memories are central to how I create images. In this new series of paintings, I am referring to incidents from my past as a mean to dissect my own identity as an immigrant. I was among the ones who have lost everything, the disinherited, the poor, the abandoned. Forty years ago, I escaped the repression and totalitarianism of the Soviet Union. I left my people behind, members of my family, my friends.
"Before I paint, I keep my eyes closed and they appear again, as clear as it was when I was lost in Vienna, my child in my arms. These images are behind each stroke of paint. I utilize this particular psychological content and emotion, embedded in my origins, to feed me and to develop — visually — my new iconography within the layers of paint in my paintings.”
The opening reception for the Thesis Exhibition will take place on Wednesday, May 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. at 8 W 8th St., New York, NY 10011, and the exhibition will be held from May 17 to May 31 at the same location.
NYSS has served as a powerful institution to help Alla Broeksmit further develop her skills. She is excited to see what the future holds for her, and is ready to display the hard-earned fruits of her labor during the MFA Thesis Exhibition. The faculty at the New York Studio School have served to cultivate and to help shape her as an artist. ABOUT ARTALLA STUDIO
A. Broeksmit is currently in the Master Program (MFA) in painting at the New York Studio School, studying in the atelier of artist and Dean of the school Graham Nickson, and also in the atelier of Judy Glantzman and Kyle Staver.
